Star Stories: Back to basics – providing hope and support in times of crisis
Southampton City Mission’s Basics Bank was recently awarded one of our Stars for Stars for its incredible work supporting people in need and promoting positive mental health across our city.
Since 1996, Basics Bank has been a lifeline for individuals and families facing hardship.
Through a network of trusted referral partners, it provides emergency food and clothing to those who fall through the gaps in the benefit system or are struggling with life’s crises.
In 2024 alone, Basics Bank fed people 18,555 times and provided clothing nearly 2,000 times – a testament to its vital role in the community.
Why basics bank matters
Mental health and financial hardship often go hand in hand. When people experience poverty, food insecurity, or sudden crises, stress and anxiety can escalate quickly. Basics Bank steps in to ease that burden by offering:
· Immediate practical help: Food parcels and clothing for those in urgent need.
· A listening ear: Volunteers don’t just hand out supplies – they take time to talk, listen and show compassion.
· Connection to wider support: Through partnerships with agencies like Citizens’ Advice, mental health services, housing associations and addiction support, Basics Bank helps people access the help they need beyond food and clothing.
This approach creates a safe, welcoming environment where people feel valued and supported, reducing isolation and promoting wellbeing.
More than a food bank
Basics Bank operates across multiple venues in Southampton, including Above Bar Church, Shirley Baptist Church, St Mary’s Church Sholing, and others.
Each location is staffed by volunteers who go beyond the basics – offering kindness, conversation and practical advice. For many clients, these interactions are as important as the food itself, helping restore dignity and hope during difficult times.
Promoting positive mental health
By meeting essential needs and connecting people to wider services, Basics Bank helps reduce the stress and anxiety that come with financial insecurity. It’s a powerful example of how community-driven initiatives can make Southampton a more compassionate, mental health-friendly city.
