Star Stories: St Christopher’s Church Family Activity Mornings

As part of our Stars for Stars initiative, we are delighted to share this Star Story celebrating the volunteers behind St Christopher’s Church Thornhill Family Activity Mornings.

This nomination is especially meaningful, as St Christopher’s has been recognised by us before for a different aspect of its work, demonstrating a continued and heartfelt commitment to creating mentally healthy spaces within the community.

Inclusive environment

The volunteers were nominated for the welcoming, calm and inclusive environment they provide for families. Each Family Activity Morning is thoughtfully planned, engaging more than 45 children with a wide range of activities designed to suit all needs and abilities. From creative play to quieter options, the sessions ensure that every child and adult feels comfortable, included and free to join in at their own pace.

Compassion

What truly stood out in this nomination was the compassion shown to a parent who experiences anxiety in unfamiliar settings. A young volunteer noticed their distress and offered personalised, gentle support – providing reassurance, a warm drink and sensory tools to help reduce anxiety, all without judgement or pressure. This simple but powerful act transformed the individual’s experience.

Kindness

The nominator shared that this kindness gave them the confidence not only to return to future Family Activity Mornings, but also to attend other playgroups for the first time. They described the volunteers as ‘true stars’, highlighting the lasting impact of feeling supported, understood and safe.

Life-changing outcomes

At Southampton Mental Health Network, we know that small, thoughtful actions can lead to life-changing outcomes. This Star Story recognises the volunteers at St Christopher’s Church for creating spaces where families can connect, feel calm and build confidence – nurturing wellbeing through warmth, attentiveness and genuine care.

St Christopher’s continued recognition as one of our Southampton Stars reflects a community spirit that puts mental health at the heart of everything it does.
