Star Stories – the Tuesday drop-in at St Christopher’s Church Thornhill

In our fifth Star Story this winter, we’re focussing on the incredible work happening at the Tuesday drop-in at St Christopher’s Church Thornhill – which is one of our brilliant Stars for Stars winners from the summer.

Gold standard

The Tuesday drop-in received one of our gold Stars for Stars for its outstanding contribution to supporting positive mental health and wellbeing in the community.

Why were they nominated?

An anonymous nominator shared this heartfelt testimonial with us:

“For a number of years now, the church has provided a warm, friendly and welcoming environment for members of the community. No matter what space you are in, you are always welcomed with a warm smile, a cup of tea and a place to just be or to chat.

“When I was feeling very low and in crisis, they were able to be there by my side, validating my feelings, allowing me to express myself, giving me space and just letting me be who I was at that time. They continued to be there and when they could see I was ready they helped me seek the support I needed.

Making support accessible

“They also arrange for various agencies to visit. This included social prescribers, housing, benefit advice, addiction support, local counsellors and police to name just a few.

“It makes accessing services actually ‘accessible’ when you are struggling with your mental health. It has helped me to get the support I needed that I would not have been able to source myself. It’s a one-stop shop to care, support, nurture and advise the local community.

Life-saving support

“Yes, it may be a church, but this isn’t about ‘making you a church goer’ – the aim is to support the community and that is absolutely the feel you get. No preaching, just support, friendship, nurture and advice. They have certainly saved my life more than once.”
